Role purpose
The Abrasive Blasting Technician is responsible for safely and accurately abrasive blasting customer parts to achieve the required surface cleanliness, surface condition, or finish prior to plating or other processing.
The role requires careful handling of customer components, correct use of blasting equipment and approved media, attention to surface condition, and strict adherence to work instructions, drawings, customer requirements, and safety procedures.
The technician is responsible for protecting critical areas, achieving a consistent finish without damaging parts, inspecting completed work, maintaining blasting equipment and the blast booth, and accurately completing required production documentation.
What you will do

- Stop work and seek clarification when blasting requirements are unclear.
02 PART PREPARATION & PROTECTION 7 duties
- Review parts before blasting for damage, contamination, sensitive features, or unusual conditions.
- Clean or prepare parts before blasting where required.
- Protect threads, bores, sealing surfaces, precision dimensions, finished surfaces, and other areas that must not be blasted.
- Apply temporary masking, plugs, caps, fixtures, or protective materials where required.
- Ensure parts are properly supported during blasting.
- Handle high-value and precision components carefully.
- Maintain identification and traceability of customer parts throughout the blasting process.
03 DRAWING & WORK-INSTRUCTION COMPLIANCE 5 duties

- Follow customer-specific surface-preparation requirements where applicable.
- Do not make unauthorized changes to blast media, pressure, surface coverage, or process requirements.
- Escalate conflicting, missing, or unclear instructions before processing.
Part geometry must be considered carefully. Internal technical documentation notes that abrasive blasting can deteriorate fine details or distort thin sections on certain components, so questionable parts should be escalated before blasting rather than processed based on assumption.
04 INSPECTION & WORKMANSHIP 9 duties
- Visually inspect parts before and after blasting.
- Verify that required areas have been blasted completely and uniformly.
- Check for inconsistent finish, missed areas, excessive blasting, embedded contamination, surface damage, or other abnormalities.
- Verify protected areas have not been unintentionally blasted.
- Compare completed work against applicable drawings, work instructions, or reference standards.
- Perform additional routine inspections where trained and authorized.
- Immediately identify and segregate suspected nonconforming parts.
- Escalate questionable product to the Floor Supervisor or Quality department.
- Do not independently disposition damaged or nonconforming customer product unless specifically authorized.
05 SURFACE PREPARATION & FINISH QUALITY 7 duties
- Produce the required surface profile or finish for subsequent plating or finishing operations.
- Maintain consistent blasting technique between parts and production lots.
- Avoid excessive blasting that could alter dimensions, surface features, or part geometry.
- Pay particular attention to thin sections, edges, threads, precision surfaces, and difficult geometries.
- Ensure blasting media does not contaminate surfaces or downstream processes.
- Prevent cross-contamination between incompatible materials or blasting media.
- Notify management or Quality if the required surface condition cannot be achieved safely.
Glass-bead blasting, for example, is used to create a consistent matte surface by propelling fine glass media against the component surface.
06 BLASTING MEDIA CONTROL 8 duties
- Use only approved blasting media.
- Verify the correct media is present before processing customer parts.
- Monitor media condition and contamination.
- Replace or replenish blasting media as directed.

- Report contaminated, excessively worn, or unsuitable media.
- Assist with maintaining appropriate media inventory.
07 EQUIPMENT OPERATION & BASIC MAINTENANCE 8 duties
- Inspect blasting equipment before use.
- Check hoses, nozzles, fittings, regulators, gloves, booth components, lighting, and other equipment.
- Monitor blasting equipment during operation.
- Report leaks, damaged hoses, worn nozzles, ventilation problems, or other equipment concerns promptly.
- Perform routine operator-level cleaning and maintenance as assigned.
- Assist Maintenance with equipment servicing when required.
- Do not operate damaged or unsafe equipment.
- Help protect blasting equipment from unnecessary wear or misuse.
08 DUST COLLECTION & BLAST BOOTH HOUSEKEEPING 8 duties
- Maintain the blast booth in a clean and orderly condition.
- Remove accumulated blasting media and debris as required.
- Monitor dust-collection performance during blasting.
- Report poor visibility, excessive dust, ventilation problems, or abnormal dust-collector operation.
- Clean floors, work surfaces, equipment, and surrounding areas.
- Prevent blast media from creating slip or housekeeping hazards outside the booth.
- Maintain adequate lighting and visibility within the work area.
- Keep access to emergency equipment unobstructed.
09 PRODUCTION DOCUMENTATION & ERP PROCESSING 8 duties
